Whether you are just beginning your life together or have weathered many storms, relationships can be rough. However, being in a committed, loving, strong and healthy marriage has many added benefits to you, your children and even our society. Study after study shows that married couples are happier, healthier, wealthier, and enjoy better sex lives than singles or cohabiting couples. Their children do better in school, have better emotional and physical health, get pregnant as teens less often, and are less likely to experiment with alcohol and drugs. Encouraging healthy dating and relationships practices is vital - not only to increase individual satisfaction, health and safety, but also to keep our communities strong for future generations.

The vast majority of marriages have the potential to be healthy and happy when couples are trained in the relationship skills that create healthy marriages. Imagine a world where the majority of the people have taken the time or even a class or two to learn about conflict resolution and communication and the skills needed to grow a healthy happy relationship. Think about how many relationships and situations that could change, become an example of a strong and healthy relationship to your friends, family and children!

Dating Tips for Couples Considering a Second Marriage

The engagement period is an important time for couples to really get to know each other. This can be especially true for couples considering a second marriage. Couples considering a second marriage often have children to consider and additional responsibilities not found with first time marriages. Finding the time to get to know each other better and stay connected can be especially tough. Even couples with children need to find time to have fun, and be romantic. So, here are a few dating basics for couples in a second marriage:

  • Make sure that at least every other date gets you out of the house and away from your daily life.
  • Plan ahead, the more thought you put into your date the better it will come out, and with busy lives and blended families it often takes more planning!
  • Get a local magazine or the newspaper “around town” section and highlight all the things that interest each of you, this will give you lots of “date” ideas.
  • Plan “family” dates periodically that include the kids (but not so often that your time as a couple suffers).
  • Be flexible, even the best laid plans can go awry!

These are just a few tips to help insure you spend quality time together. So get out there and have some fun - together!
